Why being calm can be a superpower

Let’s dive in 🤙
What does it mean to be calm?
Introverts can bring a sense of calm to tense situations.
Being calm means not showing or feeling nervousness, anger, or other strong emotions.
There is also a difference between what you display outward and what you feel inside.
Many introverts display calmness on the outside but can be feeling anxious or overwhelmed on the inside.
But in times of stress or panic, showing calmness on the outside can be extremely important.
Think about a leader in a crisis - you need to show your team you are in control and will guide them through this situation.
Or a captain on a sports team - you want to instill confidence in your teammates that you will do everything you can to win.
In high intensity situations, people look for calmness to make them feel at ease.
And that’s why it can be a superpower.
Strengths that come from being calm
1. Making good decisions
We’ve all heard the advice to not make decisions while emotional.
Many times a situation or something another person says can make us feel some type of way.
When this happens, it’s best to take a step back and let your emotions subside before responding.
If you are someone who tends to stay calm, and don’t get emotional easily, this becomes a huge strength.
2. Being seen as a leader
I previously wrote about why introverts make great leaders.
One of the items I highlighted as a ‘pro’ for introverts as leaders, is the ability to remain calm under pressure.
Most leadership positions require you to deal with high-impact situations. By being even-keeled, you give off the perception to others you are confident and in control.
This is extremely important when building and motivating teams.
3. Concentration
It is getting harder and harder to concentrate these days.
With phones at our fingertips, there is always a distraction nearby.
Being calm is also linked with being able to better concentrate. If your mind is always racing, it can be hard to focus on the task at hand.
This is a skill that will only get more important with time as technology continues to evolve and there become even more ways to try and distract us.
